How to Pack Like a Jet-Setter

suitcase in roomWhile we know you love living at Derby Park, many of our residents love spending time exploring the world. There’s nothing like the adventure of exploring a new city; we encourage it! Yet, when you are packing up at your apartment in Grande Prairie, take advantage of a few tips that can help you to pack less but have everything you need. That way, you don’t have to pay those expensive fees for taking an extra bag with you!

Tips for Packing Success

How you pack and what you bring with you when traveling really defines how affordable any trip can be. Try these tips for becoming a true jet-setter who doesn’t worry about lots of luggage.

  • Start with a packing list. Choose just what you need to have to travel, such as a toothbrush and passport. List personal items you need to have.
  • Roll and vacuum pack all of your clothing. That helps you avoid the wrinkles while also getting much more into smaller bags. This will make the best use of the amount of space you have.
  • Use every component of your suitcase wisely. For example, look for the empty space along the sides or even inside your shoes. Use that space wisely for items you need to take with you that you need to protect.
  • Place all of your liquid items into zipper-locked bags. This ensures nothing spills onto your clothing and leaves you with an expensive clean-up bill.
  • Bring the smallest items you can. Instead of packing two books, bring along a tablet to read the books on. Instead of bringing along a large bottle of shampoo, go for the travel size. This saves you a significant amount of room.

Hosting a Fourth of July Event

summer hamburgersAre you thinking of skipping the crowded bustle and noise of the large-scale public fireworks displays this year? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. A big crowd is definitely not for everyone. Fortunately, a Fourth of July party doesn’t have to be a huge production to be successful. All you really need are friends, family and food to have a great time. Here are a few ideas for hosting a Fourth of July event that everyone will enjoy!

The Food

The Fourth of July is usually accompanied by casual but delicious food. For an outdoor event, it’s hard to go wrong with traditional favorites like burgers and hot dogs, fresh off a hot grill, with some grilled corn on the cob or veggie kabobs as sides. Don’t forget the watermelon to finish off the meal with a refreshing, sweet treat!

Drinks and Desserts

Since it will, after all, be a Texas July, consider making light and refreshing desserts, like a  Key Lime Pie or fruit sorbet. Set out big pitchers of sparkling lemonade or iced tea to drink to keep your guests hydrated and happy!

Be Considerate and Responsible

Please remember that shooting off any fireworks, even small ones, is not allowed. This is more than a request for courtesy within our Derby Park apartments in Grand Prairie, it applies to the entire city. We ask that our residents abide by these laws. If there will be children attending your party who might be disappointed by the lack of fireworks, consider trading sparklers for glow sticks, bracelets or necklaces to play with after it gets dark!

However you choose to spend your Fourth of July this year, please stay safe and have a great time. If you aren’t yet a member of our community, give our office a call! We are always happy to discuss floor plan availability with our potential new residents.

5 Last-Minute Party Tips for the Big Game

FieldThe big game provides the perfect excuse to have a blow out with your friends and family, but party prep is never as much fun as actually watching the game. If you’ve invited a crowd over for a viewing party of the big game but forgot to prepare in advance, the following five tips will help you get your party together in no time.

Five Last-Minute Tips for Your Big Game Party

Set up a do-it-yourself nacho bar: No big game party is complete without snacks, and if you’re running short on time and don’t have hours to spend in the kitchen, a DIY nacho bar is a fun, festive and easy.

Put together a beer tasting: Drinking a cold beer and watching the big game go hand in hand, and an easy way to set your party apart from any other Sunday is to create a beer tasting for your guests.

Get a round of big game bingo going for the kids: Give the youngest fans at the party something to do while your adult guests are enjoying their beer tasting. Thanks to this free template, getting a game of big game bingo going is as easy as printing out score cards, passing out markers and watching the game.

Go on a Costco beer run: Even if you don’t have a Costco membership, the discount chain sells alcohol to non-members at the same low member prices. So make a Costco run to stock up on beer for your guests and save up to 35 percent over your local liquor store.

Make your own ice cream sandwiches: Whip up some quick ice cream sandwiches using Oreos and a small scoop of ice cream, then roll in sprinkles matching your team’s colors.

Residents of Derby Park looking to throw a great party for the big game should be certain to follow these five last-minute tips.

Downtown Dallas, Texas

The Differences Between Dallas and Arlington

People who have never been to Arlington or Dallas might assume the two cities are similar. They are right next to one another on the map, and they are in what’s known as the “Metroplex” area of North Texas. These two cities, however, are actually quite different in a number of ways.
1) Population. Dallas has many more people than Arlington does. Its population rounds out to approximately 1.26 million, while Arlington’s population is approximately 380,000.

2) Size. Dallas is also much larger than Arlington. The city of Dallas encompasses a whopping 385 square miles, while Arlington measures only about 100 square miles.

3) Traffic. Due to its size and population, Dallas has more highways and much more traffic than Arlington does. Many people actually commute to Dallas from Arlington to go to their daily jobs.

4) Museums. Arlington does have a small museum of art, but Dallas has more museums and of various types. The museums in Dallas include the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, the Dallas Museum of Art, and more.

5) Botanic gardens and zoos. Unfortunately, Arlington does not have any botanic gardens, nor does it have any zoos. Dallas, however, has the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, as well as the Dallas Zoo and Dallas World Aquarium.

6) Restaurants. Both cities offer a variety of restaurants, but Dallas has more options that are both unique and award-winning. Places like Ziziki’s, Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck, and La Duni Latin cafe make Dallas a desirable place for both the city’s natives and visitors.

7) Night clubs. Arlington has a number of bars, including dive bar Caves, and chain World of Beer, but it doesn’t offer much in terms of the true night life experience. Dallas, particularly downtown Dallas, has numerous night clubs and dance clubs for many different tastes.

8) Skyline. While Arlington does not have a skyline, Dallas has one of the most gorgeous skylines in the country. It is made up of nineteen skyscrapers, all of which are a sight to behold during the day and also when they’re lit up at night.

Five Affordable Ways to Add Artwork to Your Living Room

The living room is a great space in our homes to portray our creativity and personality. No wonder that the focus of home décor should always be on the living room. However, chances are that you might be running on a budget. Thus, adding affordable and easily available artwork could be the possible solution. Here are 5 affordable ideas to add artwork to your living room:

Print Your Own Photos: We live in a time where we’re able to carry a camera with us at all times that’s attached to our mobile smartphones. Better yet, these cameras take pretty quality photos. Run through your photo library and find some photos to have printed. You can get your own, beautiful photos blown up, framed, and/or printed on canvas to hang on your walls.

Add a Bit of Greenery: Get some plants for your home or apartment. Greenery substantially livens up your space. See if your neighbors or friends are ready to share some of their plants with you. Just in case they do, find out a pot to host the plants, and voila you have a good arrangement at your place.

Show your Books: Remember, there can be hardly be anything more beautiful than books. Bring out the best possible books from your collection and arrange them in a harmonious way. The result could be refreshingly handsome and creativity-inducing.

Go Retro: Find some old, vintage objects laying around your home to turn into your own art pieces. For example, a metal wheel, mason jars, and unused plywood can be painted, cleaned, and hung as decorative wall designs. These are also very versatile in the ways in which you can dress them up and put them to use.

Shop Local: The best thing about unique artwork is that it can be found just about anywhere. There are talented artists in every corner of the universe, and it can be really rewarding to support your local neighborhood artists. Search around and find someone who’s selling their artwork for less than market value to get their pieces recognized.

5 Creative Holiday Party Theme Ideas

Joyful People

The holidays are here, and you’re looking for a unique holiday party theme. Although white elephant gift exchanges and Christmas potlucks are seamless ways to entertain guests, sometimes it’s a good idea to spruce things up a bit.

Here are some holiday party theme ideas that are fun, original, and sure to leave your guests in the holiday spirit.

  • Christmas Carol Karaoke- After a couple of drinks, who doesn’t love karaoke? Okay, not everyone. However, if you like to get a little vocal at your festivities, throw a Christmas Carol Karaoke party. If you have some shy guests, ask them to deliberate as a panel of judges. This is a guaranteed entertaining and hilarious party idea.
  • Home Alone- This classic, Christmas film tends to get lost among the vast collection of Christmas movies nowadays. However, it must not be forgotten as it is a glorious tradition for this time of year. Make up some booby trap games, wear your favorite Christmas sweaters and snow hats, and set up a photo booth for your best Kevin McAllister impression.
  • Christmas Around the World- Double up your Christmas party as both a festive get-together as well as a way to get a little cultured. Have everyone choose a country, or make up teams for said countries if you have a lot of guests coming, and have each assigned country bring dishes, drinks, and gifts as well as wear ensembles based on their Christmas tradition.
  • Christmas Morning Brunch- Many Christmas parties are held at night with eggnog, fires, and gifts. What if we switched it up a bit and threw the celebration in the morning, brunch-style? Complete with keesh, coffee, pancakes, mimosas, and pajamas, you’ll be able to dine and open gifts in a cozier atmosphere this year.
  • Nightmare Before Christmas- Halloween isn’t the only time of the year that costumes are appropriate. Throw a Nightmare Before Christmas party with face paint, creepy decorations, and dark dessert ideas.

How Gated Communities Benefit Your Living Experience

Mention the words “gated community,” and a number of things come to mind. They include vitals like exclusivity, safety, and security. There are a number of benefits in living a gated community lifestyle in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The top reasons why you should choose a gated community among all other kind of living options include:

Exclusivity: This is the primary reason for people opting to stay in gated communities. Everyone who wishes to enter this exclusive zone must first bypass the gate. It means that no stray individual can willingly enter the neighborhood. As a resident of such an exclusive place, only you and a few other like-minded persons can enjoy your surroundings. The city traffic is kept out. You will also feel part of the aristocracy.

Security: This is another important factor when it comes to you enjoying a higher quality of life. You feel secured when you live within these limits. Safety measures are present to ensure that you remain immune from the problems behind those walls. The sight of cameras are routine, and the securely locked gates can only be opened with a special key or by entering a security code. It is no wonder that gated communities enjoy much lower crime rates compared to other non-gated communities and neighborhoods.

Privacy: This is another one of the many pros of living in a gated community. The walls surrounding the entire property give it a secluded feel. As a resident, you do not have to worry about strange people coming and going at odd hours.

Serenity: The serenity of the gated community will elevate your quality of life. The gated life is much quieter. The enclosed space barres a lot of noise. Excellent landscaping and the presence of a groundskeeper to take care of the trees, bushes and lions only add to higher quality of life.

There are a number of reasons as to why you will buy a home within a Grand Prairie gated community. It offers a sense of exclusivity, privacy and security.
