4 Treadmill Workouts to Try in Our Fitness Center

Fitness CenterWorking out on a treadmill can become very monotonous and boring very quickly. In fact, you may start counting down the seconds until you can turn the machine off. Believe it or not, there are many different options that still provide a great workout on a treadmill that are far from ordinary. Below are just four of these unique workouts for you to try.

Walking Lunges

There are many different uses for a treadmill that simply do not include running at all. Set the speed of the treadmill at 2 mph, which you can alter, depending on the speed that is best for you. Then, do walking lunges.

Side Shuffles

Side shuffles are just another great exercise that you can do on a treadmill instead of worrying about having enough room or running into an unsuspecting gym patron. Set the treadmill on a speed that will create a challenge for you, likely ranging from 3 mph to 5.5 mph.

Walking Plank

This workout is unlike any other. Start in a planking position with your hands on either side of the treadmill base. Have the machine set on an incline and around 1 or 2 mph. When you are ready, place your hands on the belt and walk them along for the entirety of the workout.

Crab Walk

It is very likely that you have not even done a crab walk since elementary school. However, this is a great workout that can be done on a treadmill to work your triceps, glutes, hamstrings and more. Simply walk backwards on the treadmill with your hands on the belt.

The fitness center is just one of the amenities offered to residents at the Derby Park apartments in Grand Prairie, Texas. It is a perfect place to try out these treadmill workouts and more. Call us today to ask about available floor plans.

5 Tips for Staying Healthy This Winter

TeaWinter is notorious for the spread of cold and flu viruses.  The shorter days and cooler temperatures tend to send us indoors where viruses thrive. Even in the normally warm regions of central Texas, winter weather can bring icy, cold conditions that make our Grand Prairie apartments the place to be.

Tips for Healthy Living This Winter

  • Load up on Vitamin C. During the winter season, Vitamin C can be an important component of fighting off a virus and maintaining good health. At the grocery, load up on citrus fruits and leafy greens to get your daily dose throughout the week. Supplements can also help, but whenever possible, natural foods are your best source.
  • Keep up your exercise routine. It’s easy to forgo your morning run when the temperatures dip, but studies have shown maintaining an active exercise routine can keep your immune system running at top speed.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Cold and flu viruses love an immune system that isn’t up to par. Making sure you clock eight hours of sleep each night will help your immune system be ready for the fight.
  • Get your daily dose of sun. Vitamin D is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. We can get our daily dose through fortified cereals, fatty fishes and beef liver.  If beef liver isn’t normally on your menu, an excellent source is regular sun exposure. Just ten minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen can help your body produce enough Vitamin D to ward off seasonal depression and lower your risk of heart disease.

Although winter can seem to last forever, these few tips can help you avoid illness and make the months fly by. Our community amenities at Derby Park Apartments, like our fitness center, can also help you maintain your health this winter. Perfect Your Tennis Game With These 5 Tips

Tennis is a sport that provides great exercise and plenty of entertainment. It can be a relatively easy sport to try, but a more difficult one to master. However, there are steps you can take to improve your tennis game, so that you can be more competitive and enjoy the game even more.

Choosing Good Equipment

If you don’t know whether tennis is something you want to pursue or not, you might start out with a used racquet and a few balls, If you do feel as if you are getting the hang of things, it may be time for and upgrade. Adults who play the game should have a racquet with a 26″ – 27″ grip in order to be able to get a good grip on the racquet and maintain control, usually this requires about four inches. Having good tennis shoes is also a must. While many use the terms “tennis shoes” and athletic shoes interchangeably, there is actually an important distinction. Good tennis shoes fit well and have a herringbone tread, which is good for moving from side to side.

Develop a Good Serve

When you serve well, you take control of the game, but mastering the serve isn’t easy. When you toss the ball to serve it, it should not go more than three or four inches from where you plan to hit it. As you toss it, it is best to try and spin the ball slightly in order to help the ball maintain a good velocity over the net.

Brace Yourself

To a novice, it can seem as if the ball is flying all over the place, and most would agree that it is more enjoyable to volley a ball back and forth across the net than chasing it mindlessly across the court. In order to keep better control, align your head with your center of gravity and keep it as still as possible, which will help you keep control of the ball.

Observe and Teach

Watching professional tennis players, or even people who are pretty good in your neighborhood will help you pick up a lot ofgood techniques that will keep your opponent guessing. Once you’re more confident in your own skills, try teaching others as well. The more you talk about your game, the more you will be able to reinforce your skills.
