Hosting a Fourth of July Event

summer hamburgersAre you thinking of skipping the crowded bustle and noise of the large-scale public fireworks displays this year? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. A big crowd is definitely not for everyone. Fortunately, a Fourth of July party doesn’t have to be a huge production to be successful. All you really need are friends, family and food to have a great time. Here are a few ideas for hosting a Fourth of July event that everyone will enjoy!

The Food

The Fourth of July is usually accompanied by casual but delicious food. For an outdoor event, it’s hard to go wrong with traditional favorites like burgers and hot dogs, fresh off a hot grill, with some grilled corn on the cob or veggie kabobs as sides. Don’t forget the watermelon to finish off the meal with a refreshing, sweet treat!

Drinks and Desserts

Since it will, after all, be a Texas July, consider making light and refreshing desserts, like a  Key Lime Pie or fruit sorbet. Set out big pitchers of sparkling lemonade or iced tea to drink to keep your guests hydrated and happy!

Be Considerate and Responsible

Please remember that shooting off any fireworks, even small ones, is not allowed. This is more than a request for courtesy within our Derby Park apartments in Grand Prairie, it applies to the entire city. We ask that our residents abide by these laws. If there will be children attending your party who might be disappointed by the lack of fireworks, consider trading sparklers for glow sticks, bracelets or necklaces to play with after it gets dark!

However you choose to spend your Fourth of July this year, please stay safe and have a great time. If you aren’t yet a member of our community, give our office a call! We are always happy to discuss floor plan availability with our potential new residents.

5 Ways to Go Green While Grocery Shopping

Vegetables at Grocery StoreIf visiting farmer’s markets and liquidating your paychecks at specialty grocery stores doesn’t sound like an appealing way to go green, don’t worry! You can shop at any supermarket near our Grand Prairie apartments and still be kind to the environment. Here are 5 tips to help you get started.

1. Walk the Perimeter

The inside aisles of most stores are where you will find refined, processed foods that take more energy and resources to create than the produce, dairy and meats found in the outer aisles.

2. Look for Local

Whether you’re choosing locally produced food or finished items like bread and tortillas, choosing local not only means your food is probably fresher, but it also had a much shorter trip to your store.

3. Try Organics

Although organic foods can be a bit more expensive than their conventional counterparts, organic foods tend to skip chemical additives that can be dangerous to the earth (and you!). Foods that are 100% organic are best, but even foods that are simply made with organic ingredients are better than conventional ones.

4. Less Packaging

Have you ever opened a box or a bag of something only to find another sealed package inside? From cereal to cookies to bread, an excess of packaging is everywhere. Look for foods with minimal packaging, and try reusable produce bags to cut down even further.

5. Speaking of Bags

Packing up your purchases is another place to cut down on environmental waste, too. The best option is to choose sturdy, reusable bags that avoid waste altogether. If you forget your bags at home or don’t want the hassle, bring your used plastic bags back to the supermarket and drop them in the recycling bin to keep them out of the landfill.

Seven Unique Flowers to Grow In Your Apartment

Orange Oriental Poppy flowerThere are so many varieties of flowers in this world. Yet, year after year, apartment dwellers end up planting the same old impatiens, begonias and petunias that they can purchase in big flats from the local home improvement store. Yes, they’re pretty. But there are so many other gorgeous options out there, including:

Cape Plumbago

Also known as sky flower, these pretty blue flowers thrive in the Texas heat. A bonus? Butterflies love Cape plumbago. This flower can be left to sprawl along the ground or can also be trained to climb a trellis.

Oriental Poppy

Beautiful and bold, these brightly colored flowers are the stars of any garden for the short period of time that they grace this earth with their presence.

Grandma’s Yellow Rose

Also known as Rosa ‘Nacogdoches,’ this plant boasts fragrant, lovely yellow blossoms that are perfect for cutting. And having this lovely flower in your garden is also a nod to the famous folk song, “The Yellow Rose of Texas.”

Pasque

This perennial boasts pretty purple flowers with a prominent yellow center. This flower does best when planted in sandy or gravelly soil that drains well.

Hinckley’s Golden Columbine

This is a Texas native that will grace your garden with stunning yellow flowers that are fragrant and great for cutting. Hinckley’s golden columbine is a perennial that will spread quickly and is also an evergreen.

Mexican Honeysuckle

This evergreen shrub is drought tolerant and blooms for most of the year. A big bonus? Its bright tubular orange flowers are attractive to hummingbirds.

Cigar Plant

This plant blooms in the fall and has orange-yellow flowers that are cigar shaped—hence, its name. This is another plant that is drought tolerant and will attract hummingbirds to your garden.

Do you love flowers but have nowhere to plant them? Then you may want to consider moving to an apartment that has outdoor space. Every Derby Park apartment boasts either a large balcony or patio, which you can grace with your own beautiful flowers and plants. Sounds interesting? FieldThe big game provides the perfect excuse to have a blow out with your friends and family, but party prep is never as much fun as actually watching the game. If you’ve invited a crowd over for a viewing party of the big game but forgot to prepare in advance, the following five tips will help you get your party together in no time.

Five Last-Minute Tips for Your Big Game Party

Set up a do-it-yourself nacho bar: No big game party is complete without snacks, and if you’re running short on time and don’t have hours to spend in the kitchen, a DIY nacho bar is a fun, festive and easy.

Put together a beer tasting: Drinking a cold beer and watching the big game go hand in hand, and an easy way to set your party apart from any other Sunday is to create a beer tasting for your guests.

Get a round of big game bingo going for the kids: Give the youngest fans at the party something to do while your adult guests are enjoying their beer tasting. Thanks to this free template, getting a game of big game bingo going is as easy as printing out score cards, passing out markers and watching the game.

Go on a Costco beer run: Even if you don’t have a Costco membership, the discount chain sells alcohol to non-members at the same low member prices. So make a Costco run to stock up on beer for your guests and save up to 35 percent over your local liquor store.

Make your own ice cream sandwiches: Whip up some quick ice cream sandwiches using Oreos and a small scoop of ice cream, then roll in sprinkles matching your team’s colors.

4 Treadmill Workouts to Try in Our Fitness Center

Fitness CenterWorking out on a treadmill can become very monotonous and boring very quickly. In fact, you may start counting down the seconds until you can turn the machine off. Believe it or not, there are many different options that still provide a great workout on a treadmill that are far from ordinary. Below are just four of these unique workouts for you to try.

Walking Lunges

There are many different uses for a treadmill that simply do not include running at all. Set the speed of the treadmill at 2 mph, which you can alter, depending on the speed that is best for you. Then, do walking lunges.

Side Shuffles

Side shuffles are just another great exercise that you can do on a treadmill instead of worrying about having enough room or running into an unsuspecting gym patron. Set the treadmill on a speed that will create a challenge for you, likely ranging from 3 mph to 5.5 mph.

Walking Plank

This workout is unlike any other. Start in a planking position with your hands on either side of the treadmill base. Have the machine set on an incline and around 1 or 2 mph. When you are ready, place your hands on the belt and walk them along for the entirety of the workout.

Crab Walk

It is very likely that you have not even done a crab walk since elementary school. However, this is a great workout that can be done on a treadmill to work your triceps, glutes, hamstrings and more. Simply walk backwards on the treadmill with your hands on the belt.

The fitness center is just one of the amenities offered to residents at the Derby Park apartments in Grand Prairie, Texas. It is a perfect place to try out these treadmill workouts and more. Call us today to ask about available floor plans.

5 Tips for Staying Healthy This Winter

TeaWinter is notorious for the spread of cold and flu viruses.  The shorter days and cooler temperatures tend to send us indoors where viruses thrive. Even in the normally warm regions of central Texas, winter weather can bring icy, cold conditions that make our Grand Prairie apartments the place to be.

Tips for Healthy Living This Winter

  • Load up on Vitamin C. During the winter season, Vitamin C can be an important component of fighting off a virus and maintaining good health. At the grocery, load up on citrus fruits and leafy greens to get your daily dose throughout the week. Supplements can also help, but whenever possible, natural foods are your best source.
  • Keep up your exercise routine. It’s easy to forgo your morning run when the temperatures dip, but studies have shown maintaining an active exercise routine can keep your immune system running at top speed.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Cold and flu viruses love an immune system that isn’t up to par. Making sure you clock eight hours of sleep each night will help your immune system be ready for the fight.
  • Get your daily dose of sun. Vitamin D is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. We can get our daily dose through fortified cereals, fatty fishes and beef liver.  If beef liver isn’t normally on your menu, an excellent source is regular sun exposure. Just ten minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen can help your body produce enough Vitamin D to ward off seasonal depression and lower your risk of heart disease.

Although winter can seem to last forever, these few tips can help you avoid illness and make the months fly by. Our community amenities at Derby Park Apartments, like our fitness center, can also help you maintain your health this winter. 3 Thanksgiving Safety Tips for Your Pet

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of year to have friends and family over to your Derby Park apartments in Grand Prairie. As you know, pets are welcome at Derby Park, and there are plenty of outdoor areas where pets can enjoy the beautiful Texas weather, especially during Thanksgiving time. But keeping your pet safe during Thanksgiving still needs to be a priority, which is why these three Thanksgiving safety tips for your pet will come in handy.

1. Instruct Guests Not to Feed Your Pet

Some foods that are perfectly safe for humans to eat are not suitable for your pet. These foods may make their stomaches upset or can cause other symptoms that make your pet feel unwell. Let guests know that your pet has plenty of regular pet food available to enjoy on Thanksgiving day, and that they should not feed your pet table scraps.

2. Isolate Shy Pets

If your pet is shy or fearful around people it doesn’t know well, there’s no reason to try to force them to interact with your Thanksgiving Day guests. Instead, set aside an area in your Grand Prairie apartments where your pet is isolated from all the crowds. You could close off your bedroom or a second bathroom, and make a comfortable sleeping area for your pet to enjoy until the festivities have died down a little. Be sure to place a food and water bowl in the area so your pet doesn’t have to wait to eat their Thanksgiving Day meal.

3. Put the Collar On

On Thanksgiving Day, your pet may be confused by all the strange guests walking into your apartment. Just in case your pet manages to escape, make sure they are wearing their collar and tags. If they do get out, whoever finds your pet will be able to contact you and return your pet.

Although you understand that Thanksgiving Day is about friends and family, your pet may be confused with all the extra activity. Keep them safe with these three pet-safety tips. Contact us today for more ideas about helping your pet enjoy life at Derby Park apartments.

Three Ways for Outdoor Entertaining in the Fall

Many people think that outdoor entertaining has to come to a halt once Labor Day has passed. Although it may be true that a chill in the breeze puts a damper on outdoor fun, there are several effective strategies for keeping the fun in fall without having to move the party indoors. Following are three ways that residents of apartments in Grand Prairie, TX, can extend the outdoor entertaining season.

Light a Fire

Gathering around a blazing fire in an outdoor fire pit provides an excellent way to enjoy a gorgeous autumn evening. To make the experience even better, give guests the ingredients and tools necessary to create s’mores. If the party is impromptu and you’re not prepared to make open-fire goodies, just grab some sticks and send someone to the closest store for a bag or two of marshmallows, and you’re all set.

Get Physical

Nothing keeps the heat turned up at an outdoor gathering more than physical activity, so get the party moving by encouraging guests to move to the beat of some good dance music. No one will want to take it indoors if it turns into a vibrant dance party. Just be sure to keep the music low enough so that it doesn’t bother your neighbors. You can always invite them to the party as well.

Make it Hot

One of the best ways to keep everyone toasty warm on a cool fall night is to serve hot drinks in thick mugs. The heat from the mugs will serve to warm the hands, and the contents will warm your guests from the inside out. For adults, hot buttered rums or other types of hot toddies are a good choice, while minors will love hot chocolate or hot apple cider.

For more information on how to make the most of these beautiful autumn evenings, please feel free to contact our office at your earliest convenience.

5 Tips for Quickly Cleaning Your Kitchen

Keeping your kitchen clean can seem like a time-consuming chore, but it doesn’t have to take long. Keep these tips in mind for getting the kitchen in your Grand Prairie apartment looking spotless quickly.

Soak Pots and Pans Right Away

Put warm water into pots and pans, and let them soak in the sink while you enjoy your meal. Doing this sooner rather than later makes it easier to wash them off when you’re done eating.

Do a Quick Sweep

Sweep the floor of your kitchen every day to get rid of any bits of food and crumbs that have fallen. This just takes a couple of minutes and helps keep bugs away. It also makes your kitchen floor look clean on a regular basis.

Spray Your Stove

Spray cleaner on your stove to get rid of spots and stains from cooking. Let the cleaner soak in and break up grease and other grime while you tackle a couple of other cleaning tasks in the kitchen. Go back to your stove and wipe off the surface to get it sparkling clean.

Wash Dishes After Eating

Wash and dry your dishes after you finish eating instead of leaving them sitting in the sink. This keeps your sink and counters clear and prevents dishes from piling up and making a bigger mess in your kitchen. If you have a dishwasher, put your dirty dishes in it as soon as you’re done eating.

Wipe Your Counters

Make a habit of wiping off your counters on a daily basis. This keeps dust, crumbs and grime from building up on these surfaces, and it should only take you a few minutes to do this task.
